Measures under Article 25a Visa Code, changes in the processing of visa applications of Ethiopian nationals as of 01 June 2024
From 01 June 2024, the following changes in the processing of Schengen visa applications will come into force for Ethiopian nationals:
- Standardized processing time of 45 days
- Issuance of visas with only one entry possible
- A visa application is only complete once all documents required for the purpose of the stay have been submitted (see harmonized list of supporting documents to be submitted).
The only exemptions from the 45 days processing time are applicants applying for a visa as family members of a Union citizen to whom Directive 2004/38/EC applies or family members of a national of a third country enjoying a right of free movement equivalent to that of Union citizens under an agreement between the Union and a third country. It also does not apply to family members of British citizens covered by the withdrawal agreement between the EU and the UK. The decision also does not apply to citizens of Ethiopia who apply for visa to participate in meetings with international intergovernmental organizations or at international conferences organized by a Member State.

Submission of visa applications at VfS Addis Ababa starting from 20/03/2024
Visa applications (all visa categories) for Ethiopian nationals and nationals residing in Ethiopia have to be submitted at VfS Addis Ababa from 20/03/2024. Further information can be found here.
