Major Road Projects:

ITC Trail Project and Edison Court Reconstruction

On Tuesday, September 3, construction will begin on the installation of a 10‘ wide shared use asphalt path through the ITC Corridor. The southerly limits of the path will tie into the Clinton River Path system at Edison Court and the northerly limits will tie into the sidewalk on M-59. Additionally, the trail will tie into the Schoenherr Road sidewalk system approximately 1600 feet south of M-59. The path will have multiple tie-ins to neighborhood sidewalk systems on both sides of the ITC Corridor. Also included in the project is low-level landscaping and pathway road crossings at Clinton River Road, Canal Road, and 19 Mile Road. These mid-block crossings will contain new push button flashing strobe crossing signs.

The project will also include reconstruction of Edison Court. Edison Court is located off Clinton River Road. The reconstruction will include a new asphalt pavement, on-street parking, and the 10’ wide shared use asphalt path noted in the paragraph above, and green infrastructure including landscaping and a bio-swale.

The paving is anticipated to be completed this Fall with restoration and landscaping occurring in the Spring. Edison Court will be closed beginning Tuesday, September 3, and last through the Fall to allow for the construction.

Hayes Road and 18 Mile Road intersection - (MCDR)

Concrete pavement repair work at the intersection of Hayes Road and 18 Mile Road in Clinton Township and Sterling Heights is anticipated to start September 4 and is estimated to be completed within 30 days (weather permitting). The left and center lanes will be closed on northbound and southbound Hayes Road. There will be no left turn from westbound 18 Mile Road to southbound Hayes Road and no left turn from southbound Hayes Road to eastbound 18 Mile Road. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes. The MCDR can be reached at 586-463-8671.

Moravian Road: Schoenherr Road to Garfield Road - (MCDR)

On Wednesday, July 10, the Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) will begin a 1.5 mile rehabilitation project to provide a new asphalt surface on Moravian Drive between Schoenherr Road and Utica Road. The north half of the road will be constructed first as Phase I of project. To enable Phase I construction, WB traffic will not be maintained and will be detoured while EB only traffic is maintained on the roadway. Upon completion of Phase I, the south half of the roadway will be constructed as Phase II. Notice will be provided once Phase II starts and the maintaining traffic operations will be reversed. The project is expected to be completed this November by the end of the construction season.

The project extends into Clinton Township, which is east of Hayes Road. In Clinton Township, a large culvert extending across the roadway will be replaced. This will require a short term road closure for the installation. This work will be schedule upon securing the material which will likely occur in Phase II of the project.

Update 9-17 Moravian Road is anticipated to be closed in both directions between Hayes Road and Utica Road beginning September 23 for culvert replacement work. WB Moravian Drive will be open between Hayes Road and Schoenherr Road and EB Moravian Road between Schoenherr Road and Utica Road will be closed for the second phase of resurfacing beginning September 23. A posted detour will be in place.

The project includes new sidewalk construction to close various sidewalk gaps. This will include the gap on the north side of Moravian Drive east of Schoenherr. Also, the sidewalk gap on the east side of Schoenherr from Moravian to the north will be completed. This work will require the closure of easterly northbound lane for a short time to construct the sidewalk. Sidewalk gaps will also be closed on the north side of Moravian east of Hayes in Clinton Township.

The contractor is Pro-Line Asphalt. The MCDR can be reached at 586-463-8671.

M-53 Resurfacing and Bridge Work 18 Mile to M-59 (MDOT)

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) started a $16.5M project in March on M-53 between 18 Mile Road and M-59 in March of 2024.

M-53 Schedule Update: Northbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) closed between 18 Mile Road and M-59 (Hall Road) beginning Aug. 5

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday Aug. 5, northbound M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway) will be closed from 18 Mile Road to M-59 (Hall Road) for approximately three months for road and bridge work. Traffic will be detoured via westbound 18 Mile Road to northbound Mound Road, then eastbound Dorby Drive/M-59 (Hall Road) to northbound M-53. Alternate routes are advised.

There will also be local road flagging for bridge work on M-53 at the following locations:

Clinton River Road over M-53 has reoppened to traffic

Please note that detour signage for the HCMA Clinton River Trail has been installed for the upcoming trail closure under M-53. The posted detour uses Gainsley, 19 Mile Road, Clinton River Road and Riverland Drive.

The project includes major work on ten bridges on the northbound and southbound M-53 structures at the following locations:

The project will also include milling and paving a 1½” asphalt overlay of the entire M-53 roadway pavement within the project limits. Lastly, the project will include sidewalk construction in two areas. Sidewalk will be constructed on the south side of M-59 to eliminate the sidewalk gap between Sterritt Street and the M-59 bridge over M-53. Additionally, sidewalk will be constructed on the north side of Clinton River Road to eliminate the sidewalk gap from Henry Ford II High School to 19 Mile Road. A pedestrian walkway will be constructed on the Clinton River Road bridge containing a vehicular separated barrier.

It is anticipated all road and bridge work will be done and open to traffic early Fall 2024, and each phase will take approximately 3 months. Additionally, a closure of Clinton River Road at M-53 will be necessary for a time during construction to work on that bridge over M53. A short closure of the HCMA trail under M-53 will also be necessary.

The cleanout and pipe repairs are complete. The last step, lining the pipe, is underway. The southerly eastbound lane of 15 Mile Road east of Moravian has been closed for quite some time to provide for construction access to the sewer. The lane closure will be extended to west of Moravian on Monday, May 6 which is needed for the lining operation.
